A small commemorative sampler from Little House Needleworks marking Suffrage Act Proclaimed · 1920 — the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote when it was ratified on August 18, 1920 and certified on August 26. The chart pairs the headline with a woman in a long white dress holding an American flag, a Vote block with stars, and a strawberry vine running down the side.
I made one change to the chart: the lettering across the top was re-colored to purple, white, and gold — the colors of Alice Paul’s National Woman’s Party. Purple for loyalty, white for purity, gold for light and courage. The original chart’s lettering was a single color, but switching to the NWP palette ties the words back to the women who actually fought the amendment through.
Stitched on 32ct Heritage Lugana over two with Classic Colorworks throughout — the hand-dyed threads give the lettering and figures a slightly weathered, period look that suits an early-20th-century subject. Finished on December 31, 2020 — the last day of the centennial year, which felt like the right way to land it.
