Frogwarts Year 1 by Kathryn Landis, released through The Black Needle Society — the first chart in the seven-part Frogwarts band sampler that mirrors the seven Harry Potter books, one band per year, dropped annually at The Black Needle Society’s Frogwarts online stitching retreat. Year 1 was released at the inaugural July 2020 retreat and tracks Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone.

The full band reads as a Year-1 catalogue of references, left-to-right:

  • “Wingardium Leviosa” in red script — Hermione’s correction of Ron’s pronunciation in first-year Charms, the spell Ron eventually uses to knock out the troll in the girls’ bathroom.
  • A broomstick trailing sparkles — first flying lesson with Madam Hooch (where Harry catches Neville’s Remembrall and gets recruited to Gryffindor’s Quidditch team).
  • The Sorting Hat — the talking hat that sorts every first-year student into a house. Harry’s “not Slytherin, not Slytherin” moment.
  • A pair of round glasses — Harry’s iconic spectacles.
  • A red bubbling cauldron — Snape’s first Potions class.
  • A winged Golden Snitch with a trailing path — Harry’s first Quidditch match, where he catches the Snitch in his mouth.
  • “Alohomora” in yellow script — the unlocking charm, used by Hermione to slip into the third-floor corridor.
  • Fluffy, the three-headed dog guarding the trapdoor over the Stone — Hagrid’s “I won ‘im off a Greek chappie I met in the pub.”
  • The Mirror of Erised — the enchanted mirror that shows the deepest desire of the heart; Harry sees his dead parents in it, and at the climax it’s where Quirrell can’t retrieve the Stone because he doesn’t simply want it without using it.
  • A decorative striped band running underneath the whole scene with the year’s signature line — “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”Dumbledore to Harry, after finding him sitting in front of the Mirror of Erised for the third night in a row.
  • The Padfoot pawprint border running across this band — see the Frogwarts Border entry for the freebie’s backstory; the pattern is free on this site.

Same continuous piece of 32ct Picture This Plus Heartland as the rest of the sampler — Year 1 sits at the top of the band column, with Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 below. Year 7 releases at the July 2026 retreat, which will complete the set.

Started January 21, 2024. Finished January 10, 2026 — almost exactly two years later, since I worked it on and off while keeping pace with the newer-year retreats. 11,053 stitches for this band alone.
