Frogwarts Year 7

Frogwarts Year 7

Year 7 of Kathryn Landis's seven-part Frogwarts band sampler — the Deathly Hallows year, and the band that finally completes the set. Hermione's beaded bag, Snape's doe, the Hallows symbol, Hufflepuff's cup, Gringotts and the dragon, Ariana's portrait, Piertotum Locomotor, the Battle of Hogwarts, the diadem, the Elder Wand, and the Hogwarts Express at platform 9¾. Padfoot pawprint border is my own free-pattern addition.

Frogwarts Year 7 by Kathryn Landis, released through The Black Needle Society — the seventh and final chart in the seven-part Frogwarts band sampler that mirrors the seven Harry Potter books, one band per year, dropped annually at The Black Needle Society’s Frogwarts online stitching retreat. Year 7 was released at the July 2026 retreat and tracks Deathly Hallows. This is the one that finishes the sampler.

The full band reads as a Year-7 catalogue of references, left-to-right:

  • A small maroon beaded bagHermione’s handbag, under an Undetectable Extension Charm, which is how three teenagers on the run carry a tent, a library, and Phineas Nigellus’s portrait around in something the size of a purse.
  • A silver doeSnape’s Patronus, the one that leads Harry through the Forest of Dean to the frozen pool and the Sword of Gryffindor. The whole band is built around her.
  • The Deathly Hallows symbol above a small open bookThe Tales of Beedle the Bard, the book Dumbledore leaves Hermione in his will, and where “The Tale of the Three Brothers” hides the mark of the Hallows.
  • A golden cupHelga Hufflepuff’s Cup, the Horcrux in Bellatrix’s vault.
  • A dark chandelier with Dobby clinging to the top of it — Malfoy Manor, caught in the second before he drops the whole thing on Bellatrix and Disapparates everyone out.
  • A white marble building marked BANKGringotts — with a dragon breathing fire above it: the blind, half-starved Ukrainian Ironbelly chained under the vaults, which they ride straight up through the roof.
  • An ornate framed portrait of a girl with auburn hairAriana Dumbledore, hanging in the Hog’s Head, who swings aside to open the passage into Hogwarts.
  • “Piertotum Locomotor” in navy script — McGonagall’s spell, waking the castle’s stone knights and suits of armour to defend Hogwarts. “I’ve always wanted to use that spell.”
  • Hogwarts castle in gold and slate, with the white wooden bridge below it and a pale shield charm arcing overhead — the Battle of Hogwarts, the protective dome the teachers raise over the school, and the bridge Neville brings down.
  • A small diadem with a blue stone — Ravenclaw’s Diadem, the Horcrux in the Room of Requirement.
  • A long slender wand across the top — the Elder Wand.
  • Under a gold arch, the Hogwarts Express at platform 9¾ — the epilogue. Nineteen years later.
  • A gold-and-rust diamond band running under the whole scene, and the year’s signature line beneath it — “After all this time?” … “Always.”Snape to Dumbledore, which is of course the doe.
  • The Padfoot pawprint border framing the band — see the Frogwarts Border entry for the freebie’s backstory; the pattern is free on this site. The border went up around the empty Year 7 panel back in January 2026, waiting. This is the year it finally got filled.

The Year 6 band sits directly above this one, and below Year 7 there is nothing — because there is no Year 8. Seven bands, seven books, one piece of Picture This Plus Heartland, and Padfoot’s tracks running the whole way down.

Floss changes I made to this band, for anyone following along:

  • Diamond bandClassic Colorworks Fallen Leaves on the top and bottom rows, Gentle Art Sampler Threads Harvest Moon through the centre, instead of the called-for colours.
  • The diadem — the gems in Kreinik 018 and Kreinik 011HL; the rest of the diadem in Kreinik 1432 and Kreinik 014.
  • The spellPiertotum Locomotor swapped from GAST Midnight to GAST Royal Purple.
  • Dobby and the dragon — swapped CC Dulce de Leche for DMC 945.
  • The chandelier — added Kreinik 032.
  • The sparkles — added Kreinik 033 to the centre of the repeating sparkle motifs scattered across the band.
  • The train — swapped Classic Colorworks Witching Hour for GAST Black Licorice.
  • The train - swapped GAST Old Purple Paint for DMC 3799.
  • Added Backstitching — the bank in CC Cauldron, the dragon in DMC 945, the bridge in CC Gingerbread, and the sign in GAST Black Licorice.

Started June 28, 2026. Finished July 8, 2026 — eleven days, during the Year 7 retreat itself. 12,115 stitches for this band alone, and the last stitch of a sampler I’ve been adding to since 2023.
